When I was in Florence, Italy in October, I had a breath-taking couple hours with Michelangelo’s David. It was the first time I was brought to tears by the beauty of a piece of stone. The crowd ebbed and flowed as I sat on a wooden bench, staring at David, until I couldn’t take any more sitting. Then I circled him, observing and taking pictures from every angle. I truly understood why there are still visitors from around the world 511 years
after the masterpiece was completed. The next day we saw a life-sized replica of David in a public square. It was carved from solid marble, 99.9% accurate and easily recognizable – yet 100% lifeless. It wasn’t important enough for me to pose with it for a photo. It takes amazing talent to sculpt an accurate David replica. I couldn’t do it. But no one cares. There’s a difference between a masterpiece and a replica that can’t be measured or quantified. The masterpiece is infused with a life force that the replica doesn’t have. This difference is best described by German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer: “Talent hits the target no one else can hit; Genius hits the target no one else can see.” Standing in front of the original, I felt Michelangelo’s soul speaking to mine. He genius hit the invisible target in my heart. The replica looks right, but it doesn’t move anyone. We don’t want a replica of something amazing. We want masterpieces. If you have or are building a business based on your expertise, your market wants masterpieces from you too. The rewards for masterpieces are much greater than you’ll ever receive for imitations. If you’ve read this far, there’s a really good chance that you see something in your market that no one else sees. And you probably want to use your genius to reach them at depths that no one else is reaching. You may want to give them masterpieces that take their breath away. Here are 3 kinds of genius that must come together to create masterpieces for your market:
Genius #1 – Personal Genius
You may be great calls at doing many things, but most of us have a relatively small genius zone. Operating from your genius zone means that you’re acting from deep inspiration, highly-developed talent, and impeccable personal standards. You need to come from your personal genius if you want feel fulfilled with your work.
Genius #2 – Solution Genius
In any market, there are visible opportunities to serve. There are unfulfilled desires, mistakes being made, and holes to fill. This is where your solutions are valuable. These are the things that your potential clients are paying attention to and they’re your opportunity to serve.
Genius #3 – Connection Genius
This is the type of genius that connects your work to the invisible targets that reside in the hearts and souls of the people in your market. These are the motivating forces behind the results they want you to
help them achieve. When you deliver your unique genius to these targets, you build trust and connection with your market that can’t be created by only addressing their surface-level desires. This
is the difference that makes the difference.
Practical application in business…
Here are are some of the key ways that we take this from a nice sounding concept to reality in business: Split testing – this is the fastest way to tell how well your market will respond to your offers. It’s entirely possible to double your launch results by spending only $500 on Facebook ads that drive traffic to your opt-in pages before your launch. Your signature system – I see so many people who are amazing at what they do, but don’t have their work organized into a system. They have too much information and rely only on intuition to guide their work. A good signature system leverages your knowledge AND your intuition to help your clients get the best possible results. Your marketing funnel – when people sign up for your free gift or webinar, you have the opportunity to give them an experience of your work. You can engage them, serve them, and introduce them to the mission driving your work. If you’d like to talk about how to do any of these
things in a way that feels good and supports your highest vision for your work, I’d love to talk with you..
